1. POLICY
A very busy web site
is usually good news for your business, but you may find you have to
pay a little more to your ISP as we make arrangements to increase our
network capacity for you. These circumstances are rare.
Only 1% of our clients have high-traffic accounts.
We undertake to provide a cost-effective solution for high-bandwidth
accounts at all times. Where many ISPs simply "pull the
plug" without warning, we will endeavor to warn you at the
earliest possible opportunity when we feel there may be a traffic
problem.
We endeavor to explain to you all options open to you when you are in
the enjoyable situation of having a very successful web site.
1. Web Traffic
Web traffic
is data downloaded from your web site. If for example your web site is
1MB and ten visitors to your web site browse the entire site each day,
then your total web traffic is 10MB per day (In practice however,
surfers rarely download all your data)..
Customers may transfer 1GB per month before incurring additional
charges. 500MB/month is adequate for 96% of our clients and it is
rapidly becoming the "norm" in the industry. This equates to
10 UKP + VAT per month per additional 1 GB transferred.
Additional charges
apply of 2 UK pence per month + VAT per Megabyte transferred.
Bandwidth charges are presented at the end of each month. You have
fourteen days to pay in full. Failure to pay may result in the
suspension of your web site without notice.
Q.1.
I'm over my traffic limit. What can I do?
The easiest course
of action is to pay the additional charges. We would rather not charge
you more however and there are alternative routes in order to reduce
your traffic and therefore your monthly bill:
Reduce the size of images and files
Research shows that surfers rarely linger more than twenty seconds
waiting for any particular item on a web page to download. Try to keep
images less than 20K wherever possible and use jpg and gif image
compression mechanisms.
Avoid downloads
If you place a 1MB file in your account and this is downloaded more
than about seventeen times a day, you will quickly start eating-into
your 500MB/month. Having a number of large files being downloaded at
the same time also places a burden on the pipe and may result in
degradation of service for all users. You can always place these files
on "freespace" however (see below).
Host large images on
"freespace"
ISPs often give away "free" webspace with dial-up accounts.
You probably already have such an account and it is an easy process to
bury some of your busier data elsewhere. You can then include it in
your web page from a remote location, for example, instead of using
<img src="localimage.gif" width="400"
height="109">
use instead:
<img src="https://freewebsapce.provider.net/yourname/localimage.gif"
width="400" height="109">
Host in the United
States
Traffic is often cheaper in the US and you will probably pay less for
your high traffic account. This may be at the expense of speed to your
UK clients however.
If you decide to transfer servers because of a bandwidth problem we
will refund the cost of our hosting charges on a pro-rata basis. This
excludes the cost of any domain registration, including our admin
charges for this.
Q.2.
Why do I have to pay for bandwidth?
High bandwidth
accounts present OrbitalNet (like all ISPs) with network and financial
challenges. We may need to upgrade our network to cope with your
traffic in order to maintain a reasonable level of service to our
other users. We are unable to do this without additional funds.
Q.3.
How can I tell if I have a traffic problem?
Don't worry, we'll
be in touch. We log all web sites and quickly spot the heavy hitters.
We usually let you know a few weeks before you will receive your first
invoice for additional |
